Lita
Born an identical twin, my big sister Darlita spent her brief life showing the world what made her unique. She shared a strong bond with anyone in her path but especially with her twin Mita, they were inseparable but undeniably independent. Two unique personalities, sharing the same face: Mita was the serious twin, and Lita was the silly twin. She knew how to bring the fun, cracking jokes and pulling off wild pranks. She was a warm, kind and adventurous soul, always up for singing, dancing, shopping, doing hair, finding trouble, or treating skin, anything that let her express herself, or help others. Known for her bright personality and fierce love for the people she cared about, Lita was always the one to bring light into a room.
She and her twin Mita attracted attention for their rare beauty, confident personalities, fighting skills, leadership styles and mature builds. They carried themselves with the confidence and curiosity of young girls finding their way.
They began dating at a very young age, and by age 12, Lita found herself in a relationship that turned abusive. Despite the challenges she faced, Lita’s bravery never wavered and she removed herself from the toxic situation.
Unfortunately the toxic situation stalked her. At just 14 years old, Lita showed incredible courage when she used her body as a shield to protect me, her 10-year-old sister, Jeronique, from gun violence.
Her fascinating life was cut short by an ex-boyfriend who couldn’t handle rejection. Our mama Melissa Gordon was also assassinated and myself, Jeronique suffered a gunshot wound. Though my big sister Lita is no longer here physically, we continue to honor her memory, working tirelessly to make a difference in the community, ensuring her legacy of love and bravery lives on.
In Loving Memory of Darlita & Melissa
