The Crown

Black Hair and How It’s The Crown That Stands The Test of Time

Lately I’ve been on a journey to redefine my look. I share openly with everyone who listens. I’m tired of knotless braids, not interested in wigs or chemicals. I want something fresh, healthy and inspiring I want a better way to rock the crown.

As a Black woman I understand the pressure attached to “looking presentable”. (Please note – Black girls and Black women – I love your hair however you decide to rock it). I know the ignorance attached to Black Hair. I even know that many of us in the Black community are learning more and more ways to take better care of our hair.

So, it comes as no shock to me that 90’s supermodel Naomi Campbell is doing her best to shift her hair journey.

Naomi in The 90’s

As one of the top Black models of her time, Naomi Campbell often rocks sleek, straight hair. Long, short, wavy, her hair rarely shows signs of coils or curls traditionally associated with Black hair.

You could say Naomi created a signature style, as she so often wore her hair long straight and at times with bangs. I’m sure there were several people at the hair salon saying “just do it like Naomi’s”.

I have even had my Naomi hair moments. Let me tell you something, 30 inch hair is beautiful and dreamy until you accidentally dip it in a toilet…

Though it’s not my place, I’m proud of Naomi for going out of her comfort zone to pull attention to the safety of natural hair.

Naomi Today – The Crown

During the Fall 2025 Fashion week Naomi stepped into a new hair era. She walked the runway in long wavy afro-centric hair and later in spring 2025, Naomi Campbell rocks an afro at Cannes.

It’s the crown she has always been destined for (though Naomi can rock any crown). For her 40 year career she has stayed close to straight hair, so it’s beautiful to see her stretch her hair literally and figuratively.

She’s not moving away from straight hair completely but let’s watch her journey to see where she goes.

What do you think of Naomi’s hair journey? What do you think of my hair journey? Any tips on what I should try for my next style?

I appreciate you sharing my journey and invite you to read some of my other thoughts.
